Can Vitamins Really Help Prevent Hair Loss?

Charmaine Allen

So it is a proven fact that the average person loses 50-150 strands of hair a day….but what do you do if you notice your hair loss is extreme and you are losing more than the average person? As hair loss has affected me personally, I have found that vitamins aid in naturally stopping hair loss in its tracks. As I wish there was an all-in-one supplement that would address and/or alleviate your hair and scalp issues, there is not BUT there are supplements that can prove beneficial together. Studies have shown that there are elements of nutrition that supplements help to address that may make a difference. “Daily multivitamins or prenatal supplements help to fill gaps found in our diets,” said Dr. Piliang, a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, “We tend to restrict carbohydrates or fats for weight loss or replace them with juices, but vitamins contain important nutrients like biotin, zinc, and B-complex that help to enhance the health of our hair.”

There are a few key vitamins that everyone needs to some extent in order to keep your body and hair as healthy as possible especially when looking at Alopecia and Hormonal Hair Loss:

1. Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin Seed Oil contains omega-3s, essential fatty acids, zinc, vitamin E, Vitamin K, and phytosterol — which is great for collagen production. Pumpkin Seed Oil is a great hair moisturizer that nourishes hair follicles and can promote hair thickness and hair count.

2. Maca Root

Maca root has been shown to stimulate blood microcirculation in scalp skin, thereby boosting the amount of nourishment that reaches hair follicles and positively affect new hair growth.

3. Liquid Silica

Aside from removing aluminum from the body, silica takes many nutrients to the peripherals of the body, namely the hair, skin and nails, and thus ensures that the hair follicles are supplied with all the vital minerals necessary for hair growth and vitality.

4. MSM

MSM is known as a sulfur-rich compound with anti-inflammatory properties. MSM sulfur can form bonds essential to strengthening hair and influencing hair growth.

5. Zinc

Zinc plays an important role in hair tissue growth and repair. It also helps keep the oil glands around the follicles working properly. Hair loss is a common symptom of zinc deficiency. Studies show zinc supplements reduce hairloss caused by zinc deficiency

6. Vitamin D

Research also shows that vitamin D may help create new follicles — the tiny pores in the scalp where new hair can grow.

7. Vitamin C

In addition, your body needs vitamin C to create a protein known as collagen — an important part of hair structure. Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron, a mineral necessary for hair growth.

8. Collagen Peptides

Dr. Anzelone adds that collagen helps with hair growth and hair regeneration since it is a natural antioxidant. “Normally, free radicals are produced via metabolic processes.

At the end of the day, losing hair is normal.  However, some hair loss is attributed to hair and scalp issues and could benefit from incorporating supplements into your daily routine. As every person is different, it is important to understand how a variety of supplements could benefit you and could be used to best suit your needs.
