It's Winter Time...........Let's Get In To It!!!

in News

Have you ever sat and thought about the effort you put forth to winterize your homes and even do the seasonal swap out of clothes to prepare for the winter months should also be given to your hair and hair regimen as the seasons change? Along with the cold weather winter tends to bring hair woes with it. Winter makes your hair dry, get split ends, prone to static, and leads to breakage. Cold weather often sucks out the moisture and natural oils from our scalp and strands. These natural oils are barriers on our scalp that protect our hair from falling or breaking. Not only are our strands at risk of breakage and hairfall in winter but your scalp is dry which causes dandruff in winter. This winter, lets prepare ourselves and be PROactive instead of Reactive!

Types of winter hair problems

  1. Static hair:

When the moisture levels in the air drop, your hair turns dry and brittle. This dry texture of your hair strands will feel like straws. If you have curly hair, it may get harder to maintain as curly hair in its natural form is drier.

The fix:

  1. Give your hair a break from heat styling tools.
  2. Add extra hydrating products into your hair care regimen
  3. Gravitate towards protective styles that are not too tight and don’t require much manipulation.
  4. Switch to satin pillow cases while you sleep.
  5. Split ends in winter:

Hair breakage doesn't necessarily happen only in summers. It can happen in the winters too. The loss of moisture, especially towards the ends of your hair that is naturally drier, can lead to split ends and breakages. But chopping your hair off isn't the only solution, there are many ways to fix this issue.

The fix:

  1. If you cannot wait for your stylist to work on it, slightly trim the ends of your hair.
  2. Apply moisturizing leave-in conditioner at the ends and let it set throughout the day.
  3. Oil your hair especially the ends quite often.
  4. Itchy scalp in winter:

Much like our skin, we also face dry scalp in winter, which causes dandruff and leads to flaky and itchy scalp.

The fix:

  1. Use the Hair Growth Shampoo from BlackHairAndSkincare as it is free from chemicals like silicones, parabens, and more that can lead to more drying.
  2. Use coconut oil either directly for a scalp massage or add it in your hair mask to add a boost of hydration.
  3. Use moisturizing hair products only and avoid accumulation of sweat on your scalp.
  4. Static and frizzy hair:

Once the temperature dips, your hair picks up on an electrical charge from dry hair, which causes it to erect during combing or styling.

The fix:

  1. Stock up on hydrating shampoos and conditioners that will protect your hair from being more susceptible to drying.
  2. Avoid frequent use of heat styling tools.
  3. Use moisturizing hair styling creams to apply it during and after styling.
  4. Use satin pillowcases or silk hair bonnets while sleeping.

5 Tips to solve your winter hair problems:

1.     Go easy on the shampoo

Shampoos are your hair's cleansing agent and help remove dirt and residue of hair products from your hair and scalp. But while cleansing the dirt, it also strips the natural oils that keep your hair from environmental stressors. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and limit the use to just once or twice a week. If you have extremely oily hair and need to wash it daily every alternate day, consider co—washing or rinsing only.

2.     Say no to heat:

Most of us gear up for hot showers as soon as the temperature hits a low. But overexposure to hot showers can strip moisture from the hair and your skin as well. Switch to lukewarm water when you cannot use cold water and use a shower cap while taking a hot water shower.

3.     Do not skip the conditioner:

This may sound like the most obvious hair care tip, but many of us often find ourselves negotiating the pros and cons of conditioning the hair while running late. Use a conditioner each time you wash your hair to seal in the moisture into your strands, especially during the winters. You can also try deep conditioning and hair masks biweekly.

4.     Keep up with your haircuts:

We all know the importance of getting a haircut once in a while, but we may miss out on booking that appointment with our stylist. Trimming your hair keeps it healthy and prevents split ends from turning worse. Remember to have a haircut every 2-3 months and not longer than that.

5.  Oil your hair regularly:

Massaging your scalp with oil stimulates blood circulation and boosts your hair to grow healthier. Use lightweight hair oil on your scalp and leave it overnight. Do this process at least once a week to not only get healthier hair but also feel relaxed. Once you seal in the hair shaft with moisture, it will prevent it from getting frizzy.
