Crochet Afro Over Mini Braids: My Natural Hair Length Retention Hack

in Black Hair Alchemy

I wanted a full natural-looking Afro without taking down the mini braids that have been helping me retain my length — so this is what I did.

Instead of starting over with a completely new hairstyle, I used my existing mini braids as the foundation for a crochet Afro protective style. This gave me the big, fluffy Afro look I wanted while allowing me to keep my natural hair braided underneath.

One of the biggest things I’ve been focusing on during my natural hair journey is length retention. My hair has been growing, and I’ve noticed that keeping it in mini braids helps me cut down on how much I manipulate and restyle it.

So rather than taking my braids down just because I wanted a different look, I decided to transform them.

How I Created My Crochet Afro

I left my mini braids in place and added crochet hair throughout the braids to create a fuller Afro shape.

The goal wasn’t to make the style look perfectly sculpted. I wanted it fluffy, natural-looking and similar to the shape and texture of a big natural Afro.

And the best part?

My mini braids stayed underneath.

That means I can switch up my look without immediately taking down the protective style that has been working for me.

Mini Braids and My Length Retention Journey

I’ve worn mini braids throughout the years, but this time I’ve really been paying attention to what my hair looks like between installs.

When I compared my hair to my previous mini-braid hairstyle, I could actually see the difference in my length.

That is one of the reasons I continue experimenting with ways to style my mini braids instead of constantly taking them down.

For me, my natural hair journey isn’t just about getting longer hair.

It’s about learning how to retain the hair that I grow, reduce unnecessary manipulation and find hairstyles that work with my lifestyle.

A Protective Style Can Still Be Versatile

Protective styling doesn’t mean you have to wear the exact same look every day.

Mini braids can become the foundation for several different hairstyles, and this crochet Afro over mini braids gave me an entirely different look without starting from scratch.

If you love big natural hair but also want to keep your hair tucked away, this may be another hairstyle idea to add to your natural hair routine.

And if you’re on your own natural hair growth journey, remember:

Growing your hair is one part of the journey. Learning how to retain your length is another.

It’s time to take your crown back. 👑
