DIY Avocado & Honey Hair Mask for Dry Natural Hair | Kitchen Alchemy

Okay y’all, so if your natural hair has been feeling dry, rough, dull, or just like it needs a little extra love, this is one of those DIY hair masks you can literally make right in your kitchen.

For this episode of Kitchen Alchemy, I made a DIY avocado and honey hair mask for natural hair using avocado, honey, egg, fenugreek powder, pumpkin seed oil, and amla oil.

And when I tell you this mixture came out nice and creamy… 👏🏾

This is the type of homemade hair treatment I like when my hair is feeling dry and I want something that can help with softness, moisture, shine, and manageability without making the routine complicated.

And honestly, this is what Kitchen Alchemy is all about — going back to some of those simple ingredients our mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors used before we had a cabinet full of hair products.

I show you exactly how I mixed everything together, what the consistency looked like, and how I used it on my natural hair.

What I Put In My DIY Avocado Hair Mask

Here’s everything I used:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 egg
  • Raw honey
  • Fenugreek powder
  • Pumpkin seed oil
  • Amla oil

You really don’t need a bunch of complicated ingredients to make a good homemade hair mask for dry natural hair.

🥑 Avocado

Avocado is one of my favorite ingredients for a DIY natural hair mask because it has those natural fats that help the hair feel softer and more conditioned.

If your hair is feeling rough, dry, or just not as soft as you want it to feel, avocado is definitely an ingredient worth trying.

🍯 Honey

Then I added honey.

Honey is a humectant, so it helps attract moisture.

And if you’re searching for a DIY hair mask for dry natural hair, you’re probably looking for something that’s going to leave your hair feeling softer — not hard and stripped.

The honey also helps give the mixture that nice smooth consistency.

🥚 Egg

I added one egg because I wanted a little protein in this treatment too.

Now, I’m not using an egg treatment every week.

Protein is one of those things where you really have to pay attention to your own hair.

If your hair loves protein, great.

If your hair starts feeling hard or stiff after protein treatments, you probably don’t need to use them as often.

That’s why I look at this as more of an occasional DIY strengthening hair mask instead of something I would do every wash day.

🌿 Fenugreek Powder

Of course I had to add fenugreek.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I love using herbs in my natural hair routine.

Fenugreek has been used in traditional hair-care practices for generations, and I like adding it to treatments because it gives the mixture some extra slip.

And slip is everything when you’re dealing with textured hair.

🎃 Pumpkin Seed Oil

Then I added pumpkin seed oil.

I wanted some nourishing oils in this avocado hair mask because when I’m doing a treatment for dry hair, I want my hair to come out feeling soft and conditioned.

🌿 Amla Oil

And I finished it off with amla oil.

Amla is another ingredient that has been used in traditional hair care for a very long time.

That’s really the whole inspiration behind this Kitchen Alchemy series.

I want to explore some of these traditional natural hair ingredients while also talking about how we can actually use them in our routines today.

How I Made the Avocado & Honey Hair Mask

This part is easy.

I put everything into my blender and blended it until it was completely smooth and creamy.

And let me stress that part:

BLEND THAT AVOCADO. 😂

Because the last thing you want is to be standing in the shower trying to pick little pieces of avocado out of your hair.

Especially if you have thick, curly, coily, or kinky textured hair.

Blend it until you don’t see any chunks.

How to Use This Hair Mask on Natural Hair

I like to work in sections because it makes everything easier.

Apply the avocado hair mask to your hair and make sure you’re actually coating the strands instead of just putting everything on top of your hair.

Once my hair is covered, I put on a plastic cap and let the treatment sit for about 20–30 minutes.

You don’t need crazy heat.

Just put your cap on and let the ingredients do their thing.

And because this recipe contains egg, when you rinse it out, use cool or lukewarm water.

Please don’t go jumping under steaming hot water with egg in your hair. 😂

We are making a hair mask — not breakfast.

Is Avocado and Honey Good for Natural Hair?

This is probably one of the first things somebody is going to search before making an avocado hair mask.

For me, I like this combination because I’m getting a mixture of natural fats, moisture-supporting ingredients, oils, and some protein all in one treatment.

My goal isn’t to claim that one DIY treatment is going to magically grow your hair overnight.

What I am trying to do is create an environment where my hair is soft, manageable, moisturized, and easier to handle.

Because when your hair is easier to detangle and you’re not constantly fighting with dry strands, that can also help you avoid unnecessary breakage.

And y’all already know — I’m BIG on length retention.

Growing hair is one thing.

Keeping the hair that’s growing is another.

Is This a DIY Deep Conditioner?

I would call this more of a DIY conditioning hair treatment or hair mask.

It’s something you can add into your natural hair wash-day routine when your hair needs a little something extra.

You can still follow up with your regular conditioner depending on what your hair needs.

Everybody’s hair is different.

What works beautifully on my hair may need to be adjusted for yours.

That’s why I always tell y’all:

Pay attention to your hair.

Your hair will tell you what it likes.

How Often Should You Use an Avocado Hair Mask?

Because this particular avocado hair mask contains egg, I would not personally use it every single week.

Think of it as an occasional treatment.

Maybe your hair has been feeling extra dry.

Maybe you’ve been wearing a protective style.

Maybe you’re taking your braids down and your hair needs some extra attention.

Maybe your ends have been feeling rough.

That’s when I would pull out a treatment like this.

Why I Started Kitchen Alchemy

This series is bigger than just making random DIY hair masks.

I really wanted to start looking back at the things our ancestors used to do in the kitchen.

Before we could walk into a beauty supply store and see 500 different conditioners, people were using herbs, oils, plants, seeds, fruits, and other ingredients they already had.

And I’m fascinated by that.

So with Kitchen Alchemy, I’m taking some of those traditional ingredients, experimenting with them in my own natural hair routine, and talking about what they actually bring to the table.

Some things are going to work.

Some things might be messy. 😂

Some things we’re going to tweak.

But we’re going to learn together.
